Navarra News

Bistrot-Catedral is a bar with, as you'd expect, a perfect view of the Cathedral, sitting on the cusp of the bustle of the Navarrería in Pamplona’s old town.

Its creative décor tells the story of the popular culture movement in Spain, from grassy green beginnings to the electronic age of reinvention. It's open to interpretation and closer inspection of the walls brings enough surprises and discoveries to fill up a lazy Sunday morning. The delicious cuisine is made from locally sourced produce and has a French gourmet finesse (hence all the French words), only reinforced by the stripey uniforms of the barmen. The little cork tables and chairs in the bay windows are a perfect place to relax to watch the world go by with a caña and the newspaper.

Recently, Bistrot-Catedral has been experimenting as a live music venue. The Caballo Blanco, a short walk away, was the summer venue for open air concerts. Could this be the place for local bands as the temperatures cool?

It is lacking in a stage but with the lawn as a backdrop, it does provide a cosy corner for the performers. Although it cannot be described as visual entertainment, it's a cool setting for background music. Enjoy it with a glass of red and a pintxo. Even better, they take part in juevintxos too so a pintxo and drink is only 2 euros.

Bistrot-Catedral is trendy, modern and once completed with a well-chosen performance, it can certainly have the Thursday-night Caballo Blanco spot.

The act in Bistrot this week was Hermano Lobo. They only formed 6 months ago although all the members have played together in various incarnations over the years. The group was soon recognised and invited to play at venues across Navarra - such is the music scene here and the solidarity for enjoying local music. Hermano Lobo is folky and authentic yet unobtrusive, making it the perfect complement for easy listening at Bistrot-Catedral.

John, trumpet player and English teacher in Pamplona, said, “Word of mouth is important here and the instant success of the group spurred us on to put a lot of effort into practicing and performing. Really, we’re just a bunch of friends who enjoy playing music, so anything else is a bonus!"

Keep an eye on Bistrot's website for the line-up over the coming weeks featuring Nathan Read amongst others.
